Head of Intramurals Jason Darby Gives an Update on the Year

Intramurals is in full force with sports heading into their playoffs, and others about to start up. FSC’s Intramural Sports Coordinator Jason Darby said he believes that the fall semester was a big success.

“With the fall semester having wrapped up, I think we had great participation,” Darby said. “Especially for my first semester that is. Being behind the wheel, I think it went really well.”

IMG_3324 There have been a couple new sports that were experimented with so far this year on the part of the Intramural staff. Darby said that the Handball tournament, a new addition, was something that they were impressed by, especially by the turnout for the event.

“We had a couple events that we tried out,” Darby said. “We started out this semester with the team handball tournament, which was a huge success. What we really enjoyed is that teams stuck around after their games to watch everyone else, so we had a lot of spectators too, so whenever you have a new sport like that, it’s great.”

However, the big discussion among the intramural staff is whether the sport is deserving of a full season.

“Right now, we are trying to evaluate whether we are going to bring that back as a full season sport,” Darby said. “We could also do another tournament next year to see, but that was something that was brand new this year.”

At the moment, Darby said that for the most part, intramurals are running extremely smoothly.

IMG_3332“Soccer is going fantastic,” Darby said. “The [five on five] basketball season is about to start their playoffs, so we can get those wrapped up before spring break. Registration runs through the end of this week for four on four lag football tournament. Registration started this week and runs through next Friday for Ultimate Frisbee and Floor Hockey, which are two of our big league sports that will go on through March and into April.”

At the end of the year, Darby said that the staff will be losing quite a few seniors that have contributed as intramural staff, and that they will be looking for replacements if any students were potentially looking a job opportunity on campus.

“Unfortunately we will be losing a decent amount of seniors this year,” Darby said. “The way I do it, is I hire whoever I feel is the best candidate. We will be sending out information later in the year about when we will be doing the hiring.”
